Canyon conditions:

The Fish river canyon has received some good inflows this year, which equates to having to carry less water. Water in the canyon is of very good quality however it is at your discretion to make use of chlorine tablets or filters. We will provide further feed back on this closer to the event.

Event date has been chosen as such due to it corresponding with the full moon. Again this makes for much more comfortable movement through the canyon at night and places less of a burden on navigation.

Further updates on expected weather conditions will be provided in due course.

Mandatory Equipment:

NB - The following list of equipment is mandatory and competitors will undergo an equipment inspection at registration. Competitors will under no circumstances be allowed to officially start the race if they are not signed out at registration as having the equipment listed below:

1. GPS (with loaded track)
2. Head torch (Preferably with flashing light option)
3. Water purification tablets / equipment
4. Min 3lit water capacity
5. Basic medical aid kit
6. Hat / head protection against sun
7. Matches / fire lighter
8. Thermal protection (Space blanket)
9. Whistle

NB: A final equipment check will be done at the race end point, should the participant be without any of the above equipment, they will forfeit their right to a finishers medal as well as an official race time.

Each athlete is required to carry some form of thermo protection in the case of getting injured and having to wait for assistance / extraction from the canyon, ideally this would be in the form of "Space Blanket". Temperatures can vary from hot (40Deg C) day time temperatures to freezing night time conditions. In addition to this some form of rehydrate is considered to be an essential part of the athletes equipment!

Shuttle:

We will be providing a shuttle service from Windhoek to the FRU race Village and return again to Windhoek after prize giving on Sunday the 19th June. Cost of this service will be determined by the amount of people making use of this and will be communicated once entries have been closed off. Shuttle service will depart from Klein Windhoek Guest House at 5am on the morning of the 17th June .

SHOULD YOU WISH TO MAKE USE OF THIS SERVICE THEN PLEASE INDICATE SO PER RETURN MAIL TO - tinus@aep.org.na

Route & GPS:
For the purpose of this event, a GPS which can download tracks is required, a GPS watch with basic features such as distance covered / heart rate etc only, is not suitable!

Attached below also 2x GPX files detailing exact course and way points for both the 65km & 100km options. These can be loaded and saved into most GPS devices.

It is mandatory that you make use of a GPS device together with the provided routes when taking part in the event. As the route may seem fairly obvious as one follows the course of the Fish river, it is always sound advice to do periodical checks of your progress and confirm that you are still on track. A lack of concentration or moment of mind wondering can cause one to takes a turn up a side canyon, which although not a critical mistake can cause one a substantial loss of time and waste of energy. Should this happen in the hours of darkness, then matters would be considerably more complicated. Again the GPS becomes a valuable tool at night as the environment takes on a completely different personality and the canyon can become a little confusing. The comfort of a GPS will really outweigh the added discomfort of the additional weight this may be to carry.

Should you experience difficulty downloading tracks onto your GPS, we will have a facility at registration to assist you. We however cannot guarantee compliance with Tom Tom devices.

In addition to the attached routes you will also find a map providing directions to the 1st Night race village.

Medical requirements:

A requirement from the National parks for all people entering the Fish River Canyon is to complete and submit a medical checkup form. This form needs to be filled in by your GP and provided to the race organizers at registration.

Should you not be able to open this document for any reason, then let us know so we can make alternative arrangements. Please note again, this is a requirement before commencing the race!

Our next update will provide a event itinerary highlighting important times to be taken note of as well as meal menu's and predicted weather forecasts.

From the AEP team, all the best with your final preparations!

2016 Windhoek Light Namib Quest - Event Update No.206 May 2016

16 Days to GO to the start of your Namib Quest adventure!!

This year will see around 60 riders taking on the challenges that the "Quest" will throw at you. Many different wilderness scenes and experiences lie ahead of you.

Entries are kept small in this event which provides our participants lots of opportunity to network around the camp fires and form new lasting friendships, typical when quality riding time is spent in remote unspoiled wilderness areas, away from the everyday hassle.

Please take note of the following information:

Event end point: This year the challenge will end again on the grassy knoll next to the aquarium, right next to the beach in Swakopmund. A small change to the last few Km's has been done this year, to avoid the riders having to navigate through Swakopmunds main roads. On entering Swakop the route will keep to the southern side of the town avoiding busy roads, as far as possible. Route will be marked and marshals placed at key points. Finishing right next to the beach provides a wonderful atmosphere and highlights the many contrasts the event has to offer, from riding through the Namibian Khomas Hochland escarpment, down through the Namib Naukluft park, ending on the beach.

Last stage will again be in time trail format (56km), which will see all the riders finishing in close proximity to each other. Prize giving will commence at 11am, under the tent at the finish point.

Snack vendors will be at the finish point and "refreshments" will be on hand.

Event Bags: The event bags which will be provided to you at registration are approx. 900cm x 500cm with an additional "wet storage" area below the bag. These bags have proven to be sufficiently big in previous years, however if you are prone to pack the the kitchen sink, then we would suggest you place your bedding in a separate bag which you will need to ATTACH to your event bag (Not a plastic Bag). This will ensure that your bag and bedding arrive at the same tent.

Kit List: We have been requested by some to give an indication of a kit list, this is rather a personal choice thing, however the following items would be seen to be key:

Sunscreen
GPS (GPX tracks will be sent to you, also you can download at registration)
Bedding
Towel
Personal medication
Essential / /specific bike spares
Puncture repairs equip / bombs
Warm items for evening
Torches
Cash (bar / tech support etc)
Sock Gaiters (if you have a light weight gaiter to prevent grass seeds into shoes then this would be rather convenient, the grass is long in some places)

Medical: Event paramedics will be with us all the way, so if you want critical medication items left with them, this can be arranged at registration. They will also have comprehensive medical items with them to treat almost any eventuality...Percy the chief medic is also a good listener / comforter if the rigors of the wilds become to much:-)

Physio Details: The following ladies will be on hand after each days ride to provide for some comfort to sore muscles:

Brigitta Augustyn
Ellen Hoffman
Erika Brand
Janine Snyman

They will be available at event registration on the 21st, to take your bookings for the week. A cost of N$ 250.00 will be charged for a 30 minute treatment. This will naturally be done on a first come first serve basis.

Bike Tech Support: Refer below info from Mannie:

2015 Fish River Canyon Ultra - Update No.105 Jun 2015

Dear FRU Participants,

Just short of a month to go to race day, we hope your final preparations are going according to plan!

This is the 1st event “Update” leading into the 2015 event, we request that you please take careful note of the content!!

Firstly welcome back to those athletes who took part last year and a warm welcome to the new faces!

Mandatory Equipement:

NB - The following list of equipment is mandatory and competitors will undergo an equipment inspection at registration. Competitors will under no circumstances be allowed to officially start the race if they are not signed out at registration as having the equipment listed below:

1. GPS (with loaded track)
2. Head torch (Preferably with flashing light option)
3. Water purification tablets / equipment
4. Sun Screen (High PF)
5. Min 3lit water capacity
6. Basic medical aid kit
7. Hat / head protection against sun
8. Matches / fire lighter

9. Thermal protection (Space blanket)
10. Whislte

Shuttle:

We will be providing a shuttle service from Windhoek to the FRU race Village and return again to Windhoek after prize giving on Sunday the 5th. Cost of this service will be determined by the amount of people making use of this and will be communicated once entries have been closed off. Shuttle service will depart from Klein Windhoek Guest House at 5am on the morning of the 3rd July.

Attached below also 2x GPX files detailing exact course and waypoints for both the 65km & 100km options.

Event Entries:

Below is a list of event entries. Our data base was corrupted therefore if there is no distance option next to your name or size of shirt then please inform us ASAP!!

SUPER SPORT (Super Cycling) Viewing Schedule for 2015 Namib...02 Jun 2015

2015 Windhoek Light Namib Quest Update No.320 May 2015

Dear Quest Riders,

Looking forward to greeting old and new faces next week! It would appear that we will have a dry Quest this year, up till now we have been dealt the odd downpour during past events. At this stage rain is not predicted. Do take note to pack some warm items for the evenings, it can get rather chilly, specially early morning!

Route download: Attached below please find the GPX file covering the entire 6 stages. You can download this to most Garmin applications such as Garmap / Basecamp as well as other similar applications. Once downloaded you can sync your GPS with the application and download the route onto your GPS device. Not to worry if you having problems with this, we will be able to assist you at registration.

N.B..it is highly advised that at least one of your team members has a GPS, in order to verify you being on the correct path, ever so often. Route will be clearly marked, however it can happen, in the pain of the moment, that you miss a vital marker, resulting in you going on to explore more of Namibia than you intended!!

Bike support: Trust you have all taken the time to approach one of the service providers to discuss your bike packages. Attached is a questionnaire which can be used to provide further details to the service providers.

Please note that registration will take place from 12:00 on Saturday till 16:30, at which stage we will do the welcome and event briefing. Sunday morning, 7:00am “sign on” with start scheduled for 8am. First section of the route on the western By Pass will be a controlled section i.e. no racing & staying in a group, once the turn off to the Kupferberg pass is reached, then it’s your own pace.

Airport Shuttle: There has been several request for airport shuttles on arrival / departure. Our shuttle service is only from the end point back to Windhoek, dropping of at the Windhoek Country Club & Resort. Should you be looking for a reliable airport shuttle then the following email address can be used to book: diamond@danmar.com.na

Good luck for your last preparations and should you be traveling, please do so safely!!

Regards from the AEP TEAM

2015 Windhoek Light Namib Quest Update No.228 Apr 2015

Greetings Quest riders,

imagetitle

Exactly 1 month to go to “Kick Off’!!

Thank you for all the correspondence, questions and enthusiasm! It would appear we have a wonderful group this year, providing lots of opportunity to network around the camp fires, form new lasting friendships etc. Typical when quality riding time is spent in remote unspoiled wilderness areas, away from the everyday hassle. Total field will be close to a 100 riders this year!!

Please take note of the following information:

Post Event Function: Finish point will be different to last year, this time around the open grassy knoll next to the Aquarium will be the final destination! We believe this will enhance the atmosphere being right next to the beach! We will provide further information pertaining to the end function with the next update. Suffice to say, due to the time trail (56km) being on the last day, all riders will finish quite early and together. Our formal proceedings will therefore conclude around mid day, which provides for the afternoon to spend last few hours together.

Event Bags: The event bags which will be provided to you at registration are approx. 900cm x 500cm with an additional "wet storage" area below the bag. These bags have proven to be sufficiently big in previous years, however if you are prone to pack the the kitchen sink, then I would suggest you place your bedding in a separate bag which you will need to ATTACH to your event bag (Not a plastic Bag).

Punture repairs equip / bombs
Warm items for evening
Torches
Cash (bar / tech support etc)
Sock Gaiters (if you have a light weight gaiter to prevent grass seeds into shoes then this would be rather convenient, the grass is long in some places)

Event paramedics will be with us all the way, so if you want critical medication items left with them, that we can arrange at registration. They will also have comprehensive medical items with them to treat almost any eventuality...Percy the chief medic is also a good listener / comforter if the rigors of the wilds become to much:-)

Physio Details: The following ladies will be on hand after each days ride to provide for some comfort to sore muscles:

Kerstin Graf
Brigitta Augustyn
Lynn-Mari Lochner

They will be available at event registration to take your bookings for the week. This will naturally be done on a first come first serve basis. Details around costs will be made available in next update.

Bike Tech Support: Tech support will be curtesy via:

Cymot
Mannie’s Bike Mecca - mannie@mr-african.com
Das Bike Shop - das@dasbikeshop.com

You will need to contact your preferred supplier before hand and book service packages as per your needs!

NB: As water is a scarce commodity, we cannot provide water to each rider to clean their bikes, this will only be available from the Bike Tech service providers.

Shuttle service: Following persons have booked with the shuttle from Swakop to Windhoek, should your name not appear and you require this service, please email to tinus@aep.org.na :

Saturday 30th May (9:00am) -

John Fitzgerald
William Alcock
Rory mc Farlane
Emil Burger
L van Zyl Swanepoel
Seamus O’Neil
Sandy Kelly
Iris Halldorsdottir
Martin Roberts
Gail Green
Malcolm G Green

NB: In the past special bike trailers have proven to be ineffective, due to qty of bikes and different couplings suited to different bikes, therefore please ensure you have either a bike bag or some protective material to ensure your bike does not get damaged on the trailer (we will transport this for you to the end..)

In the next update, detail will be provided regarding the daily food menu, bar prices. A cash bar will be available in each village, providing for beer, wine, soft drinks and limited range of hard tack. Other items will include:

Water points
Water allocation

Best of luck for your last preparations, now not a good time to pick up a injury!!

Till next comms, all the best.
