The Fish river canyon has received some good inflows this year, which equates to having to carry less water. Water in the canyon is of very good quality however it is at your discretion to make use of chlorine tablets or filters. We will provide further feed back on this closer to the event.
Event date has been chosen as such due to it corresponding with the full moon. Again this makes for much more comfortable movement through the canyon at night and places less of a burden on navigation.
Further updates on expected weather conditions will be provided in due course.
NB - The following list of equipment is mandatory and competitors will undergo an equipment inspection at registration. Competitors will under no circumstances be allowed to officially start the race if they are not signed out at registration as having the equipment listed below:
1. GPS (with loaded track)
2. Head torch (Preferably with flashing light option)
3. Water purification tablets / equipment
4. Min 3lit water capacity
5. Basic medical aid kit
6. Hat / head protection against sun
7. Matches / fire lighter
8. Thermal protection (Space blanket)
NB: A final equipment check will be done at the race end point, should the participant be without any of the above equipment, they will forfeit their right to a finishers medal as well as an official race time.
Each athlete is required to carry some form of thermo protection in the case of getting injured and having to wait for assistance / extraction from the canyon, ideally this would be in the form of "Space Blanket". Temperatures can vary from hot (40Deg C) day time temperatures to freezing night time conditions. In addition to this some form of rehydrate is considered to be an essential part of the athletes equipment!
We will be providing a shuttle service from Windhoek to the FRU race Village and return again to Windhoek after prize giving on Sunday the 19th June. Cost of this service will be determined by the amount of people making use of this and will be communicated once entries have been closed off. Shuttle service will depart from Klein Windhoek Guest House at 5am on the morning of the 17th June .
SHOULD YOU WISH TO MAKE USE OF THIS SERVICE THEN PLEASE INDICATE SO PER RETURN MAIL TO - firstname.lastname@example.org
Route & GPS:
For the purpose of this event, a GPS which can download tracks is required, a GPS watch with basic features such as distance covered / heart rate etc only, is not suitable!
Attached below also 2x GPX files detailing exact course and way points for both the 65km & 100km options. These can be loaded and saved into most GPS devices.
It is mandatory that you make use of a GPS device together with the provided routes when taking part in the event. As the route may seem fairly obvious as one follows the course of the Fish river, it is always sound advice to do periodical checks of your progress and confirm that you are still on track. A lack of concentration or moment of mind wondering can cause one to takes a turn up a side canyon, which although not a critical mistake can cause one a substantial loss of time and waste of energy. Should this happen in the hours of darkness, then matters would be considerably more complicated. Again the GPS becomes a valuable tool at night as the environment takes on a completely different personality and the canyon can become a little confusing. The comfort of a GPS will really outweigh the added discomfort of the additional weight this may be to carry.
Should you experience difficulty downloading tracks onto your GPS, we will have a facility at registration to assist you. We however cannot guarantee compliance with Tom Tom devices.
In addition to the attached routes you will also find a map providing directions to the 1st Night race village.
A requirement from the National parks for all people entering the Fish River Canyon is to complete and submit a medical checkup form. This form needs to be filled in by your GP and provided to the race organizers at registration.
Should you not be able to open this document for any reason, then let us know so we can make alternative arrangements. Please note again, this is a requirement before commencing the race!
Our next update will provide a event itinerary highlighting important times to be taken note of as well as meal menu's and predicted weather forecasts.
From the AEP team, all the best with your final preparations!
